A thought provoking feed back from Atiqur Rahman, Head of Development, he writes:
“I’m not an emotional guy. But Subhan’Allah I did have tears in my eyes and even now sharing this I’m filled with emotion in such a happy way and then filled with such sadness at the same time.
This week saw children across the UK, back to school. How fortunate that even with a pandemic there is free education to children in the U.K.
I went to Burundi for the first time in May 2019, and I was horrified with the level of poverty in the country. We heard that Burundi is the ‘hungriest nation in the world’, as described by the UN, but nothing could prepare us for this level of poverty.
21st century? Yet children are eating leaves to kill their hunger; drinking brown dirty water; children as young as 6 working for less than a dollar a day, 12-14 hour shifts, barefooted, dirty clothed, bones sticking out of joints that have been deformed from carrying items for money of which the weight is more than their little body itself weighs.
Meet NSHIMIRIMANA Lionel, he is 6 years old, he has 3 sisters, he is the only boy of the family, none of them study, their parents are not able to pay for them to go to school.
Now imagine without education what future does he have... he will be another child labourer working for peanuts and the vicious cycle will continue. His children and their children and so on...
But there’s hope this little angel is one of the fortunate ones, our team in Burundi were able to find him, support him and his family and give him a chance to learn, dream and a chance to have the opportunity to work out of poverty when he’s older.
Hes going school in a few days, today he got his school uniform. The picture you see of him is him wearing the only item of clothing he has.
It costs £20 a month or £240 for the full year to sponsor a child to be in education and it allows him to support their families too.
Donate now so they can have hope too.
