Winter and the struggle for survival
Homeless, hungry and at high risk of deadly disease… this is the plight that tens of millions of displaced people in refugee camps and conflict zones will have to contend with as temperatures start to plummet. The global pandemic is set to deeply exacerbate the dire humanitarian situation in countries already in the midst of catastrophes.
At the severe peak of those experiencing calamity, displaced Syrian and Yemeni families face the danger of living out in the open air or in makeshift camps without access to heating, warm clothing and nourishing food – the most basic elements necessary for survival.
In Gaza, the crippling siege of land, air and sea cements grinding poverty amidst the daily struggle to survive against conflict, minimal water resources and electricity. Winter is a time of real and terrible struggle.
Once temperatures climb down to below zero, only the toughest will be able to evade the risk of serious illness and death. Every year we see tragic but real reports of the elderly and new-born babies who have frozen to death, with various degrees of misery and indirect death for others as a result of the harsh conditions.
The stark truth is that we cannot rescue everyone yet – but with a little generosity, many of us reading this CAN afford to save one life or two, perhaps a whole family or more. Those in need will be desperately relying on the generosity of someone like you to help keep them warm and safe and their family intact. Your donations will be a lifeline.
We will be distributing emergency relief across the globe throughout the winter months. Our teams are working in war-torn Gaza, Yemen and Syria. We will be in refugee camps in Turkey and Lebanon as well as poverty-stricken communities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Rohingya Refugee camps.
